Abstract: Hydrocarbons of all sorts and sizes are found throughout the various stages of star and planet formation. For example, from infrared spectroscopic observations we have learned that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in space. The same class of organic molecules are also found in planetary atmospheres, such as that of Saturn’s largest moon Titan. Soon, Europa Clipper mission will be on its way to the icy moon Europa to investigate its (organic) chemical composition. In this seminar, I will discuss our experimental studies that allow us to investigate the detectability of interstellar and planetary hydrocarbons. I will also show how we can obtain detailed insights on the (photo)chemical processing of organic molecules in interstellar and planetary environments. The latter studies are crucial for the interpretation of data from the future Europa Clipper and Dragonfly missions.

The Physics Frontiers Centers (PFC) program supports university-based centers and institutes where the collective efforts of a larger group of individuals can enable transformational advances in the most promising research areas. The program is designed to foster major breakthroughs at the intellectual frontiers of physics by providing needed resources such as combinations of talents, skills, disciplines, and/or specialized infrastructure, not usually available to individual investigators or small groups, in an environment in which the collective efforts of the larger group can be shown to be seminal to promoting significant progress in the science and the education of students. PFCs also include creative, substantive activities aimed at enhancing education, broadening participation of traditionally underrepresented groups, and outreach to the scientific community and general public.
