CU Wizards Program
David Nesbitt directs the CU Wizards Program which, for over three decades, has presented free shows that teach children about the wonders of science. One Saturday morning each month, renowned CU Boulder professors and members of the community host interactive shows on the CU Campus. The shows are geared toward children and young adults in grades K-12, but everyone in the community is welcome to join in. CU Wizards audiences are quite large, Wizards often present to over 200 young people and many of them are newcomers to the Wizards shows. CU Wizards brings in professors from across the sciences and provides undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs alike the opportunity to get involved in the local community. The Physics Frontiers Centers (PFC) program supports university-based centers and institutes where the collective efforts of a larger group of individuals can enable transformational advances in the most promising research areas. The program is designed to foster major breakthroughs at the intellectual frontiers of physics by providing needed resources such as combinations of talents, skills, disciplines, and/or specialized infrastructure, not usually available to individual investigators or small groups, in an environment in which the collective efforts of the larger group can be shown to be seminal to promoting significant progress in the science and the education of students. PFCs also include creative, substantive activities aimed at enhancing education, broadening participation of traditionally underrepresented groups, and outreach to the scientific community and general public.
