  abstract = {<p>The discovery of&nbsp;extrasolar planetary systems&nbsp;has revolutionized the theoretical study of&nbsp;planet formation&nbsp;by allowing us to see the&nbsp;Solar System&nbsp;as one example of an astonishingly diverse ensemble of&nbsp;planetary&nbsp;systems.&nbsp;This review summarizes the similarities and differences between the&nbsp;Solar System&nbsp;and currently observed&nbsp;extrasolar planetary systems,&nbsp;and discusses what we have learnt about the early&nbsp;evolution&nbsp;of&nbsp;planetary&nbsp;systems&nbsp;from the first decade of&nbsp;exoplanet&nbsp;discoveries.</p>
